Chapter Ten

Freddie sat at the dining table working on his laptop. Because of the open plan nature of the living room, he could see Ranti and Yomi lounging on the sofas watching Fast and Furious 7 movie on the TV mounted on the opposite wall. The wood-frame round rustic round clock beside it read 8.25 p.m.

The children should have been in bed already but it was Friday night. None of them had to be up early.

Kike was in the kitchen. They’d finished having dinner a while ago. But she’d made fresh pop corn so the air hung with the scent of sweet toasted maize.

The sun had long set over their home. The more affluent Ikoyi was to the south west of them, Chief Essien’s luxury family home only about ten minutes to drive at this time of night. If he wanted to pop over and visit Tony, he could quite easily since he was so close by. As it was Friday night, Tony could possibly be out partying at Reams. Freddie could join him.

But Freddie didn’t want to. He had to admit that since he’d met Kike, he’d felt less inclined to be anywhere she wasn’t. Not that he’d ever been much of a party animal in the first place. But he’d enjoyed the times they hung out at Reams.

Now he found he preferred to listen to the background noise of the children chatting about the movie they watched. He found himself smiling as he listened and even made the occasional comment while he distracted himself from the proposal he wrote for Tolani.

He’d decided that since he was no longer charging for his time as Kike’s bodyguard, he had to ramp up his income through other means. The consultation work he provided for Tolani as well as the bodyguards he provided would add to his portfolio at Banks Security. Also Tolani had influential connections and she’d already introduce one other potential client to him for future business.

Kike came out carrying two bowls of popcorn.

“Are you still working?” she asked as she breezed over to a sofa, putting the bowls down. “Won’t you join us?”

“I’ll be there shortly,” he replied. “I just need to send this email. I’d promised Tolani I would send this out tonight.”

“Mum, you missed where the cars parachuted out of the airplane. It was awesome,” Yomi said.

Freddie grinned at the excitement in the boy’s voice.

“Have I?” Kike replied as she settled into the seat.

On the TV screen Vin Diesel and his crew were trying to pull off an ongoing heist while driving fast cars along a windy mountain road. There were the usual explosions as well as ass-kicking all in very fast moving vehicles.

“You do know that if that was in Nigeria they would all be dead,” Ranti said.

“Why do you say that?” Freddie asked with amusement.

“Because no car can jump off a cliff and have survivors,” the girl replied.

“You’re right. It is a very dangerous thing,” Freddie said.

“That’s the fun of the movie,” Yomi said, rolling his eyes.
